Falling Leaves Moon October 6

 Hello Bioregional friends,

Thank you for your interest in regenerative storytelling, permaculture, degrowth, bioregionalism, or all of the above.  As a sharer of stories, I send you a monthly email of events and links which are hosted locally in Milwaukee, regionally, or on-line. If at some time you don't want these emails, let me know and I'll update my mailing list.

Two October event details:

Online Permaculture Design Class starts Wednesday 10/8:

$400 tuition for once/week class through February, with recordings if you miss. Scholarships available. It would be delightful if several of us from the Milwaukee area take this course and support each other's projects, co-mentor each other and build a "guild" much like plants support each other, flowing nutrients and resources.  I am "retaking" the class, so you will have a friendly local face each week as you connect with people around the world who are developing their own permaculture practices, whether on land they own, or through their social permaculture in the community.  I took the class to become a better storyteller, and my final project was telling a story about the Sturgeon's return to the Milwaukee River.

October 17th 10 am DeGrowth Cafe at Kuumba Juice/Coffee, flyer attached.

This event is co-hosted with Dylan Carson, a 2024 engineering school graduate and a facilitator from the DeGrowth Institute in Chicago. Among other things, Dylan hosts a book club focused on climate solutions related to degrowth, meaning degrowing our economy and consumption patterns to stay within planetary thresholds through creative new solutions. Dylan is offering a "DeGrowth 101"-style presentation and discussion, and has shared a pdf scan of the history of degrowth and key texts, available here:

Don't feel pressured to read though--show up ready for this summary of key points if you like.

Registration form to receive email for zoom link for those who cannot attend in person: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdSfpiYy5BGKnWkISBOtDeZz4VlFBQkPxShQllQcs7kvbASWQ/viewform

This is an opportunity to explore the entanglements between the relationship-focused ethics of bioregionalism, permaculture traditional Indigenous principles, and an engineer's view of designing degrowth-oriented on-the-ground solutions.

We will also spend the afternoon learning about parks and community gardens in a walk and talk format.

Nov 8 From Mapping Racism and Resistance project, Dr Ann Bonds UWM: We invite you to join us for a special public event on Friday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Centennial Hall inside Milwaukee Public Library’s Central Library (downtown Milwaukee). Here is the link to register for the event: https://mpl.libnet.info/event/14691254

Over the past two years, the Mapping Racism and Resistance in Milwaukee County Project (MRR-MKE) has uncovered and mapped nearly 32,000 housing racial covenants across the county. On Nov. 8, we’ll share the results of this work—maps, archival findings, and stories that reveal how racially restricted housing shaped Milwaukee’s neighborhoods and continue to influence the present. This event is also our chance to thank you - the many volunteers and supporters who made this work possible.

Danika's offering from MKE FreshAirCollective:

Have you wondered about the air in your neighborhood?

Check Out MKE FreshAir Collective’s 2024 Air Quality Report. In partnership with Data You Can Use, last year’s air quality data was analyzed from 21 neighborhood air sensors across the Milwaukee area. Learn how to check your local neighborhood air quality, how air quality changes seasonally, and how your neighborhood air sensor compares to Milwaukee’s average.

We want your feedback!

Now through October 31, 2025, if you read through the report and take this survey, enter to win a raffle for a $10 gift card. We appreciate your suggestions and ideas to improve next year’s report.

We have a new digital space for bioregional organizing in the Lake Michigan region--the Lake Michigan place-based hub in the Design School for Regenerating Earth.  These hubs are free to join, and "nested" so consider joining the Great Lakes Basin hub as well if you like, or create a new hub to reflect your more specific place-based organizing space. To join this space where you can learn about and share in-person and online events, click here: https://design-school-for-regenerating-earth.mn.co/share/AkKzSrJjfIsmPmYt?utm_source=manual

Tikkun Ha'Ir’s Veggie Chop Shop is a community meal program that focuses on gleaning, or collecting, donated produce from local farmers, cooking, and delivering healthy meals to organizations around Milwaukee that support low income families and individuals. Bonim Farms is a workforce readiness program that employs adults with disabilities and donates produce to the Jewish Community Pantry
